A meeting of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), chaired by NAB Chairman retired Justice Javed Iqbal, reviewed the monthly preliminary report by the Combined Investigation Team (CIT) tasked with probing the alleged sugar subsidy scam.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Chairman Hussain Asghar, Prosecutor General Syed Asghar Haider, DG Operations Zahir Shah, DG Rawalpindi Irfan Naeem Mangi and other senior officers attended the meetings.
The team consisting of two investigation officers, a financial expert, legal consultant, expert of the sugar industry, additional director and director, has the services of impartial, independent, experienced and hardworking members, led by NAB Rawalpindi Director-General Irfan Naeem Mangi, to probe the sugar subsidy scam.
The NAB chairman expressed satisfaction over the monthly preliminary report of the CIT with the directions to complete the probe in impartial, transparent, on merit, and professional way.
The CIT has been tasked with collecting records of subsidy on sugar from all the provinces besides acquiring reports of financial and audit of the concerned companies through the Securities Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) as per law.
During the meeting, the NAB chairman directed that the officials and departments should be given an opportunity to justify/clarify their positions as per law.
He said NAB will take action in accordance with the law against all those who illegally received subsidies of billions illegally.
He further directed the officials to complete all complaint verifications, inquiries, and investigation on the basis of concrete and solid evidence after obtaining certified and authentic documents in accordance with the law, so that the probe may be completed and accused persons should be brought to justice and allegedly looted money should be recovered. Also, the NAB Rawalpindi has arrested Dr Shafqat Ali and Luqman Mirani after the rejection of their bail from the Supreme Court of Pakistan in a case of Baitul Noor Housing Society. After transit remand, both accused persons will be shifted to NAB Karachi in order to obtain their remand into NAB Karachi as per law. the national exchequer.
