LAHORE: After holding a meeting with Pakistan’s civil and military leadership on Monday, United States (US) Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said the US wants to keep its longstanding ties with Pakistan.
According to a statement issued after the meeting, Mattis said that his visit was meant for securing long-term ties between the two states.
Acknowledging Pakistan’s sacrifices in war against terror, US defence secretary said that he was well aware of the sacrifices rendered by Pakistan army.
He also lauded the professional capabilities of the army.
No “safe heavens” for terrorists in Pakistan
Prime Minister Shahid khaqan Abbasi, during the meeting, told the US defence secretary that there was no “safe heavens” for terrorists in Pakistan.
Intelligence-based operations are underway across the country to maintain peace, PM Abbasi said.
He also appreciated the America’s resolve to not let Afghan soil to get use for anti-Pakistan activities.
Abbasi and Mattis agreed to continue co-operation in fight against terrorism.
Jim Mattis arrives in Pakistan
United States (US) Defence Secretary James Mattis arrived in Pakistan on Monday morning.
This is Mattis’ first visit to the country since taking over the charge of the Pentagon.
Secretary Mattis landed at an air force base in Rawalpindi and headed straight to the US Embassy. Upon his arrival, he was received by officials from the Defence Ministry, the Foreign Ministry and the US Embassy.
On Saturday, Secretary Mattis had told reporters that during his time in Islamabad he would look for “common ground” between America and Pakistan.
