JHELUM: A local court sent the husband of murdered Pakistani-born German woman to prison on a 14-day judicial remand.
The husband, Shahbaz, is the prime suspect in the case and allegedly murdered his wife on December 27 due to a dispute over a joint bank account.
An investigation officer informed media that the couple had returned to Pakistan from Germany after 16 years. The officer said that this was Dr Uzma’s second marriage, after she had divorced her first husband.
According to sources privy to the development, the couple’s 14-year-old son, Ammar, testified against his father in a statement recorded before the police. In the statement, Ammar said that his father first fired in the air and then shot his mother. The boy said, “I tried to stop him but he did not listen to me.”
Police also recovered a pistol used in the crime.
In October of 2016, the parliament approved a bill aimed at the prevention of honour killings in the country, eliminating a loophole that allowed killers to be exonerated after being pardoned by family members of victims.
In a similar incident of honour killing this year, a British Pakistani girl, Samia Shahid, was killed in the name of honour in Jhelum. Moreover, a social media star, Qandeel Baloch, was also murdered by her brother for honour.
