A survey that was recently conducted by the British government speaks volumes about the condition of Pakistani expatriates in Britain. The survey concluded that the Pakistani community living in Britain was the most backward among the different immigrant communities living there.
According to media reports, the survey mainly revolved around the economic standing of the community and the ability to communicate with and adapt in a foreign environment. The survey revealed that the number of unemployed Pakistani-origin men was three times the number of unemployed men from the white community. Moreover, one in every four Pakistanis drives a taxi as their primary source of income.
The survey also unveiled that 57 percent of Pakistani-origin women were either unemployed or inactive – not part of the active workforce. This number is again higher than the number of inactive or unemployed women from other communities. For example, the number of white women who are unemployed stands at 25 percent.
Furthermore, the survey found that a number of Pakistanis in Britain face difficulty in settling in the new environment. The survey revealed that inadequate English speaking skills posed a major obstacle to Pakistanis adapting to the new environment.
