MIANWALI: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the Chashma-III Nuclear Power Plant Project on Wednesday.
The project, which is a joint collaboration of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) and China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), is expected to provide 340 MW of energy to the national grid.
This is the third such project after the successful commencement of operations of Chashma-I and Chashma-II power plants. A fourth plant, Chashma-IV, is scheduled to be completed in 2017 and along with the Karachi Nuclear Power Projects K-2 and K-3, will add a total of 8,800 MW of electricity to the grid by 2030.
Around 733 MW of power, using nuclear energy, has already been added to the system, said PAEC Secretary Attiq Ahmed. He was briefing the National Assembly’s Committee on Planning, Development and Reform on the development on this matter. All the nuclear power projects, including Chashma-III have been approved by Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority for Nuclear Safeguards as per International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) agreements.
