LAHORE: Launch of “Newborn Resuscitation Programme” was held at College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan Regional Center with the collaboration of Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America (APPNA) on Tuesday.
According to details, Prof Khalid Masood Gondal, senior vice president CPSP inaugurated the programme along with Dr Sajid Chaudhry, president APPNA, Prof Mahmood Ayyaz, director National Residency Programme CPSP, Dr Najma Afzal, MPA and advisor to APPNA and Dr Ayesha Najib, course chair APPNA.
Prof Gondal said with the Implementation of preventive measures during the birth of newborn the morality rate can be minimised in rural areas. He also welcomed Dr Najma and praised her for assuring to support the programme at government level.
He highlighted the achievements of CPSP as the 1st institution in the region that got the franchise of American College of Surgeons for ATLS, ACLS, BLS, etc.
APPNA is the largest organisation known for transfer of technology. He also briefed about the CPSP’s statistics, induction process and residency programme. He added that 500 doctors will go to the UK through MTI scheme to work in various teaching medical institutions.
Prof Ayyaz gave a detailed account of Advanced Skills Department, including ATLS, BLS, ACLS and PALS. He said Prof Zafarullah Chaudhry floated the idea of holding ATLS long ago and he worked on it. He said that launching of the NRP is a great step to save the lives of newborns.
Dr Ayesha Najib said the newborn mortality rate is very high in the country and this course would be helpful in reducing it. She said newborns are highly vulnerable and one golden minute is the life saving minute. She said most of deliveries take place in homes and no trained person is present there to look after the newborn.
Dr Sajid Chaudhry said it is necessary to promote medical education in Pakistan. Over 18,000 are members of APPNA across the world. APPNA is involved in facilitating the visas for young physicians for America. APPNA also provides loan to the young doctors for various educational activities. APPNA is mostly engaged with medical profession and also involved in charitable works. He said I am proud to collaborate with CPSP. He appreciated the efforts of Prof Gondal and Dr Ayesha for providing this opportunity to APPNA.
Dr Najma congratulated the organisers for launching the programme. She said, “It is a noble cause all of us must participate in it accordingly.” She said the NPR would be helpful in reducing the mortality rate in newborns. She assured that she would try her best to spread this programme in all 36 districts of Punjab.
Prof Amir Zaman Khan, Prof Muhammad Tayyeb, Prof Abrar Ashraf Ali, Prof Waris Farooka and Prof Ghulam Mustafa Arain were present.
