ISLAMABAD: The accountability court that is hearing corruption references against sacked prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family could not go ahead with proceedings due to the absence of the defence counsel on Tuesday’s hearing.
Nawaz, accompanied by his daughter Maryam and son-in-law MNA Capt (retd) Safdar arrived at the court early morning for the corruption hearing.
Nawaz and his family face three corruption references filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) upon directions of the Supreme Court of Pakistan due to its July 28 Panama Paper’s case judgment.
Nawaz and his two sons, Hussain and Hasan are nominated in all three references ie Al Azizia, Avenfield and Flagship whereas Maryam Nawaz and Safdar are accused in only one case that is the Avenfield case.
As the hearing resumed accountability court judge Mohammad Bashir was told that Sharif’s counsel, Khawaja Harris could not make it to the judicial complex as he was busy in matters pertaining to the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
The defence then pleaded before the court to adjourn the hearing as the Islamabad High Court is also set to announce its ruling on Nawaz’s request to club the three references into a single case.
The hearing resumes on December 4.
