JAMSHORO: A three-day interactive theatre festival which aimed to promote gender equality concluded at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, on Thursday. A play called “Money Back Guarantee” which aimed at empowering and educating women was staged on the first day.
The event was organised by the University of Sindh in collaboration with the Karachi Thespians theatre and featured two major components which included a live theatre performance and a theatre training workshop for students of English Language and Literature, Media Studies, Art and Design. Around 100 students participated in various technical sessions at the workshop. The professionally trained team of the Thespians Theatre which was led by its Executive Director Faisal Malik imparted training to the varsity youth in important dimensions of the theatre performance. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Maula Bux Chandio, Vice Chancellor (VC) Fateh Muhammad Burfat and Hyderabad Additional Commissioner Khalique Mirza also attended the event. Among others, President of the Pakistan-US Alumni Network (PUAN), Jamshoro chapter, Kazi Fahad, Faheem Noonari, Akhtar Hussain Mughal, Director of the Institute Naimatullah Khilji, Saeed Mangi, Ghulam Ali Buriro as well as a number of faculty members and students attended the festival.
Addressing the occasion, Chandio stated that the festival highlighted social issues and educated people on social problems. He also commended Fateh Muhammad Burfat on his job as VC.
Burfat said stage drama was a strong medium of education which played a vital role in transforming societies through the reflection and identification of social evils. Burfat stated that the purpose of the event was to educate people about gender inequality and discrimination and to encourage them to change the patriarchal status-quo. Khaliq Mirza also commended Burfat on his job as VC and showed appreciation for the thought provoking subject matter of the plays. Around 100 students participated in various technical sessions at the workshop. Appreciation certificates and shields were distributed to the actors, management, faculty, students, officers and employees who had worked day in and day out to make the event a sparkling success.
