KARACHI: The amendment in the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) laws should be made through the parliament and not using the option of an ordinance, said Senator Saeed Ghani of the Pakistan People’s Party here on Saturday.
Addressing a press conference, he said that the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) has completely failed to fulfill their promises of reform in the judicial system. He said that his party has serious reservations on NAB authority and they were unable to understand plea bargain clause.
In 2008, PPP had the intention to amend NAB’s ‘plea bargain’ clause, but at that time PML-N have blocked all efforts in this regard, he told a questioner. Now the prime minister wanted to amend such law by bringing an ordinance to take all the credit, he said. “PPP has reservations over the amendment in NAB laws through ordinance,” he said.
He said that the NAB laws should be amended through the parliament. Senator Ghani demanded an apology from Federal Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs Senator Ishaq Dar on amnesty scheme. “Whenever PPP wanted to bring such (amnesty) scheme, Senator Dar opposes it and now he (Dar) himself going to announce the amnesty scheme during his tenure,” he pointed out. The government should withdraw ‘voluntary return’ clause of the embezzled money by public servants from the NAB authority as it should be allowed by the court not the (NAB) chairman, he added. To a query on the conclusion of military courts, he said that the government has promised to completely reform the judicial system.
He said that the existing legal system was ineffective to sentence the hardcore criminals. Unfortunately, the government has failed to reform the judicial system, he said, adding that at the time of military courts formation, as per government promised it should reform and improve the judicial system at the end of the military courts.
