LAHORE: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Secretary Babar Yaqoob said that the constituencies would be revised before the general elections 2018 in accordance with the results of the latest census.
He was addressing a seminar on Elections Reforms Bill on Monday. At this occasion he claimed, on the behalf of ECP, to prepare the fresh rolls for the next elections as it would be useless, according to him, to conduct the elections without the delimitation of the constituencies.
“The next elections will be conducted after constituencies are revised in accordance with the new census,” he said.
“As the 6th Population and Housing Census 2017 has been conducted, now it became a constitutional requirement to carry out this process before the next elections,” he noted.
Commenting on the newly passed bill he said, “ECP is now satisfied with the powers and resources given to it.”
“Now ECP can act independently instead of taking orders from the government,” he remarked.
ECP Secretary also termed the bill as “the first step towards right direction.”
